AS THEY LEFT THE LAUNDRY and drove past the school complex, instead of making small talk, Dave asked the Capt., “looking back over all the years, what was the best part of your job?”

“That’s a hard one answer off the top my head, Dave,” the Capt. replied. “I think the one thing that’s going to stay with me forever is the quality of the officers I worked with over the years. Don’t get me wrong, there been some real stinkers, but on the whole, by a ratio about 99 to 1, the good outnumber the bad. I’d have to say that one of the favorite parts of my job, was watching new officers as they developed, and hopefully helping them along. There were some though that there was just no helping out.”

“Yeah,” Dave agreed, “there’s been more than a few winners that slipped under the wire and made it all away to retirement.”
