Excerpt from Chapter III – “Morning Will Come”

THE CAPTAIN WENT THROUGH THE gatehouse for the last time. Edna had retired last year to spend time with her grandchildren. A kid that didn’t look old enough to date the Capt.’s daughter was behind the officer’s station. “Good morning, Sir,” the young officer greeted ”How’s it going today?” There had been so many new officers coming and going, that the Capt. couldn’t remember all the names. He stole a quick look at the kids name plate. “Pretty good so far, Officer Johnson. How was the night?”

“It was pretty dead. I don’t even think Captain Gaines left the office.”

“Is that really so unusual?” the Capt. asked
